SORE NIPPLES AND BREASTFEEDING
Sore nipples are very common for breastfeeding women, particularly in the early stages with your newborn bub. Some of the more common causes may include:⠀
- a baby not latching well
- chafing
- thrush
- adapting to this new skill
- tongue tie ⠀
Soothe and ease discomfort with these simple tips for sore nipples: ⠀
Breastmilk!
Your breastmilk has amazing healing properties. Applying some to your nipples can help relieve soreness. You can also try expressing a little breastmilk before a feed to soften the areola and lubricate the nipple.
Latch
Make sure your bub is in a comfy position with a good latch.
Warm Compress
Using a warm compress prior to a feed can help to soften the areola and stimulate milk flow. Try our BodyICE Woman Breast Pads, which can be gently heated in the microwave and will fit comfortably inside your bra.
Nipple Creams
Applying a nipple cream after a feed may help soothe your damaged nips. Lanolin based ointments are the best option, and completely safe to use on your nipples after a feed.
Loose Clothing
Avoid tight clothing and underwire bras to reduce pressure on the breast. The friction from clothes rubbing on your breasts can be uncomfortable or even painful. Try our reusable nursing pads made from bamboo terry, which is designed to be soft against skin and sensitive nipples.
Saltwater Rinse
Chafing and mild scabbing is common in the early days of breastfeeding. Using a saltwater rinse each day can help keep the area free from infection. Here’s a simple recipe:
- Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt (preferably Epsom or sea salt) in 1 cup of warm water
- Soak nipples in a small bowl of this solution for around 1 – 2 minutes after a feed.
- Rinse in (unsalted) water
- Pat dry or allow to air dry
Tongue Tie
If bub is struggling to get the hang of latching, this could be due to an issue with their mouth. Conditions such as tongue tie can make it hard for them to nurse properly. If you feel this may be the case, always seek advice from your medical professional.
Cold Therapy
Try using our BodyICE Woman Breast Pads cold after a feed to help reduce pain and discomfort. You can check them out here.
Whilst tender or sore nipples are often a symptom of breastfeeding, ensure you seek medical advice should the pain persist.
